  Equally important to our commitment to employment and housing, the Louisville Urban League recognizes that it has a growing responsibility in developing and educating our youth. Many of the youth we serve come from at-risk backgrounds with various barriers hindering their ability for a successful future. Through our Youth Development and Education program, we are committed to "building tomorrow's leaders" for it is clear:

NULITES
(National Urban League Incentives to Excel and Succeed)

  A leadership development program for middle school students that offers youth concrete experiences to foster personal visions of success and self-sufficiency.  
       
Urban Youth Golf Program (UYGP)
  A golf and academic enhancement initiative promoting opportunity, increased self-esteem and confidence for minority and at-risk youth.  
       
Rising 5th Graders Saturday/Summer School
  A Saturday/Summer School initiative designed to enhance the academic performance of at-risk fifth graders.

NULITES Activities:

NULITES (National Urban League Incentives to Excel and Succeed) is a leadership development program designed to provide urban youth from diverse backgrounds with opportunities to advance their academic, personal and social development. The program targets middle school students who participate in various activities that provide the following specific outcomes:

Development of long-term strategies and goals in education and employment.

Development of good leadership and decision-making skills.

Increased community service and civic-mindedness.

Urban Youth Golf Program 

The Urban Youth Golf Program is a unique partnership between local government, Metro Parks, Jefferson County Public Schools, the PGA, local businesses, golf organizations and the Louisville Urban League. Through this program, metro-area, minority and economically disadvantaged youth learn the rules, etiquette and history of golf as well as learn about the various opportunities relating to the industry. In addition to learning the game, the program seeks to assist the participants improve their academic performance and social development while improving self-esteem and building confidence. The requirements for participation in the program include:

Must be in grades 5-12.

Have a positive attitude.

Have satisfactory academic performance (a 2.0 GPA)

Have school attendance of 80 percent or better.

Parents/Guardians pledge to voluntarily participate in 20 percent of all activities.

Complete an orientation process on program objectives.

Should reside in a metro-area neighborhood.

The Rising 5th Graders

This program is a Saturday/Summer School program designed to improve the math and reading skills of students entering the 5th grade. Through the program, the students gain the tools needed to successfully transition into the 6th grade. Fifty students participate in the program annually. Some of its components are provided below:

Curriculum focuses on teaching reading, math and language arts.

Meets every Saturday during the school year.

Summer School meets four weeks in June and July.
