LOUISVILLE URBAN LEAGUE’S AWARDS HIGHEST HONOR TO “PGA OF AMERICA”
- Half-million dollar investment in youth golf program recognized -
Louisville, KY - The Louisville Urban League, the region’s advocacy organization for African Americans, other minority groups and the disadvantaged, has awarded its highest honor--the Arthur M. Walters “Champion of Diversity Award”--to the Professional Golf Association of America (PGA). The PGA is the first organization to receive the Urban League’s high recognition and the first recipient outside the Metro Louisville area since the award began in 2004.
The award is in recognition of the PGA’s financial contribution of $500,000 over the past 10 years to fund the Louisville Urban League’s Urban Youth Golf Program (UYGP), which targets inner city youth and other youth from diverse neighborhoods and backgrounds. The investment by the PGA has resulted in the participation of over 1,500 local youth since the program’s conception. Additionally, since its beginning, over 8,000 Metro Louisville youth, ages 11 to 18, have been exposed to the game through an annual recruitment campaign and weekly demonstrations in schools, community centers and youth clubs.
“The PGA of America has the distinct honor of being the first organization to ever receive our highest award for commitment to diversity,” said Ben Richmond, President and CEO of the Louisville Urban League. “We are indebted and extremely appreciative for the PGA’s dedicated support of programs that encourage inclusiveness.”
The award was formally presented to Joe Steranka, Chief Executive Officer of the PGA of America, at an evening ceremony at the Brown Theatre during Ryder Cup week in Louisville, Kentucky.
Mission of the Louisville Urban League: As an active partner, leader and catalyst, we will assist African Americans, other minority groups and the disadvantaged to attain social and economic equality and stability through direct services and advocacy. FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - August 28, 2008 - Urban Youth Golf Program FACT SHEET
The PGA has contributed a total of $500,000 over the past 10 years to fund the Louisville Urban League’s Urban Youth Golf Program (UYGP). The investment has resulted in the participation of over 1,500 local youth from diverse neighborhoods and backgrounds since the program’s conception. The seed of UYGP dates back to 1996 when local civil rights activist Rev. Louis Coleman, Jr. called upon the PGA to provide more inclusive opportunities. The PGA responded to the challenge by funding a Louisville-area program that introduces inner city and minority youth to golf and also helps them to develop important life skills. The funding is through the golf organization’s charitable wing--the PGA Foundation.
