The Urban League provides school-aged youth with the pathway to becoming successful academically, personally, and socially.  The key to this success is an initiative called NULITES (National Urban League Incentives to Excel and Succeed), our brand for Youth Development and Education programs.

 The NULITES initiative strives to instill the following core values in our youth:

• Work within one’s neighborhood to further its development
• Respect one’s mind and body as well as the minds and bodies of others
• Celebrate one’s heritage and culture as well as those of others

Education Summit

An additional strategy aimed at helping youth to be successful is the Urban League’s annual Education Summit.  The event, held in February, engages the community in a public discussion of issues impacting youth attending Jefferson County Public Schools.  Topics are wide-ranging, and have included such issues as the JCPS Student Assignment Plan and Parental Involvement.  

Parent Leadership Academy

Research shows that increased parent involved leads to children being more successful in school and life in general. The Parent Leadership Academy is a program that encourages parents to take a more active role in the education of their children.

The Parent Leadership Academy supports parents by providing:

• Interactive parent leadership training for parents/caregivers
• Increased knowledge and better access to educational support
• Incentives and recognition for participation and end of course celebration
• Lunch and good conversations
• Child care during sessions for children (for children that are potty-trained and older)
• Opportunity for school-based leadership

Expected outcomes for parents are:

• Improved interactions with the school system
• Opportunities to be involved in school-based parent organizations
• Political advocacy
• Increased knowledge and skills for parental involvement

All sessions of the Parent Leadership Academy are held the Louisville Urban League, 1525 West Broadway, Louisville.  Sessions are limited to 50 people. Lunch is provided.

It's easy to participate in the Parent Leadership Academy, and it's absolutely free. Parents can register by contacting their Family Resource/Youth Services Center Coordinator or by phoning the Louisville Urban League at (502) 566-3363.
