Urban League Assists U.S. Postal Service Fill Vacant Positions

The U.S. Postal Service will conduct two Application and Assessment Information Sessions on Tuesday, February 7th and Wednesday February 8th , 2012 at the Urban League located at 1535 West Broadway. The U.S. Posal Service is hiring for non-career positions in Kentucky and Indiana. The positions include: Postal Support Employees paying $16.40 per hour and Casual Mail Handlers paying $12.00 per hour.

The League's Center for Workforce Development is assisting the Postal Service to recruit for these postions.  The sessions are designed to better equip applicants to be successful in applying and being accepted for the positions. There are limited spaces available for both sessions and it requires pre-registration. Interested persons can click to REGISTER NOW! for a space at one of the sessions.

 
2012 Education Summit

CREATING A COLLEGE GOING CULTURE

The Louisville Urban League, a longtime advocate and leader in youth education and development, will present the 2012 Education Summit on Saturday, March 17, from 9:00 AM to 1:00 PM at Central High School Magnet Career Academy, 1130 West Chestnut Street.  The primary focus is to raise awareness of a multi-year initiative and to educate people on organizations and institutions whose participation is key to achieving 15,000 college degrees by 2020 from the African American community.

Employers and job seekers have the opportunity to connect at the Louisville Urban League’s 18th annual “Louisville Career Expo.”  The event, which traditionally attracts over 2,000-plus job seekers and about 75 exhibitors, is scheduled on Wednesday, March 21, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Kentucky International Convention Center.  

Traditionally one of the largest events of its kind, admission to the Louisville Career Expo is free to the public and targets adults who are 18 years of age or older.  The event offers companies and employers the opportunity to: 1) meet face-to-face with large numbers of qualified job applicants; 2) diversify their workforce; and 3) build relationships to further promote their company’s objectives and mission.

2012 Parent Leadership Academy Now Enrolling!

“Academy” Seeks to Improve Student Achievement    PLA-LOGO250

The Louisville Urban League is recruiting parents for its 2012 Parent Leadership Academy. The Parent Leadership Academy is a six week training program that will develop skills and knowledge of parents and prepare them to become engaged advocates of their children's education and be encouraged to increase their involvement in schools' PTAs and Site Based Decision Making Councils. The curriculum includes 12 workshop modules-activities delivered over six consecutive Saturdays. Scheduled to begin February 4th, the League is accepting applications from parents that want to participate in the Parent Leadership Academy.

Start Fresh Program Helps People Return To Banking

bankonlogo-smallThe Louisville Urban League in Partnership with Bank on Louisville helps people return to banking with the Start Fresh program.  This is a program for persons who have been denied new accounts due to negative (non-fraud) banking histories, and who are willing to participate in a certified financial education program.  After completing the program, participants will understand the basics of bank reconciliation and understanding how their account works so that they have the opportunity to re-enter the traditional banking system the smart way. 

Classes are offered once each month at the Louisville Urban League and interested persons can contact the League's Center for Housing and Financial Empowerment at 502.566.3362 to enroll in the free program. Classes are from 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM. for upcoming class dates, please call.
