LOUISVILLE URBAN LEAGUE AWARDS HIGHEST HONOR TO “PGA OF AMERICA” - Half-million dollar investment in youth golf program recognized -
Louisville, KY - The Louisville Urban League, the region’s advocacy organization for African Americans, other minority groups and the disadvantaged, is awarding its highest honor--the Champion of Diversity Award--to the Professional Golf Association of America (PGA). The PGA is the first organization to receive the Urban League’s high recognition and the first recipient outside the Metro Louisville area. The award is in recognition of the PGA’s financial contribution of $500,000 over the past 10 years to fund the Louisville Urban League’s Urban Youth Golf Program, which targets inner city youth and other youth from diverse neighborhoods and backgrounds. The investment by the PGA has resulted in the participation of over 1,500 local youth since the program’s conception. Additionally, since its beginning, over 8,000 Metro Louisville youth, ages 11 to 18, have been exposed to the game through an annual recruitment campaign and weekly demonstrations in schools, community centers and youth clubs.
“The PGA of America has the distinct honor of being the first organization to ever receive our highest award for commitment to diversity,” said Ben Richmond, President and CEO of the Louisville Urban League. “We are indebted and extremely appreciative for the PGA’s dedicated support of programs that encourage inclusiveness.”
The award was presented to Joe Steranka, Chief Executive Officer of the PGA of America, on Monday, September 15, 2008 at the Brown Theatre in Louisville, Kentucky. The presentation preceded an “Evening With Butch Harmon,” a fundraising event for The First Tee of Louisville, a partner in the Urban League’s Urban Youth Golf Program. Some of the program graduates from past years were in attendance for the presentation.
