Empowering Parents to become active partners with public education

The Louisville Urban League is recruiting parents for the 2013 Parent Leadership Academy. The Parent Leadership Academy is a six week training program that will develop skills and knowledge of parents and prepare them to participate and engage in PTA, Site Based Decision Making, and educational advocacy in their child's school. The curriculum includes 12 workshop modules-activities delivered over six consecutive weeks beginning January 26, 2013.

Enrollment is limited and requires parents to apply for acceptance into the Academy.

EXPECTED OUTCOMES FOR GRADUATING PARENTS INCLUDE:

  • Improved interaction with the school system

  • Opportunity to be involved with school-based parent organizations

  • Political advocacy-becoming active in efforts affecting local educational policies

  • Increased knowledge/skills for parental involvement

WHO SHOULD APPLY:

Parents and caregivers of children attending Jefferson County Public Schools which are designated as Title I, and who are eligible to receive free/reduced lunch. Participants must demonstrate sincere commitment and a clear understanding of Parent Leadership Academy expectations. Participants must commit to participation in the full roster of workshops offered as part of Parent Leadership Academy.

THE ACADEMY PROVIDES:

  • Interactive parent leadership training for parents, guardians and caregivers;

  • Increased knowledge and better access to educational support;

  • Opportunity for school-based leadership assignments;

  • Incentives and special recognition for participation
